Comfort for the Soul Message of the Day

Many people are experiencing major change right now, or at least contemplating it. I was talking with a client this week about her life feeling like it's "falling apart." For most of us, when we lose people or our pets, relationships end, or our careers shift suddenly, it feels like our life as we knew it is unraveling. It often feels like we are unraveling.

My client asked about this. Why does it happen? How come, when it  rains, it often pours?

Life as we knew it, falling apart, is an opportunity for "quickening" our soul growth. In other words, the ego/personality wants to have a comfortable, content life. The ego avoids pain at all costs and seeks only pleasure. It will do almost anything to stay comfortable, including spending years in a situation that isn't authentic (work or relationship) or furthering it's growth.

By contrast, the soul, while it loves life and wants to have joy and pleasure too, is most interested in growth. So when it feels like life is "unraveling," it's an opportunity for the soul to advance. In my experience, if we aren't going out of our comfort zone voluntarily in order to grow and experience new things, the soul will jumpstart our growth by attracting experiences that will "break our hearts open" so that we will grow.

I, and many other teachers of spiritual growth, believe that we are here in Earth school to learn and grow -- that this is the greater purpose for our life (in addition to having fun and enjoying life.). The soul's impetus to grow is stronger than our desire to stay comfortable. Many times, the only way a person can ignore their soul nudges is to self-medicate with alcohol, food, TV, busyness, "responsibilities," or other distractions.

While everyone distracts themselves at least occasionally, if you aren't choosing to ignore your restlessness or angst or self-medicating it, congratulations!  You are saying yes to your growth by facing the inner nudges inside you and not succumbing to the ego's pull to stay comfortable where you are.

It's natural to have fears that you are not equipped to handle the uncertainty that you're feeling. The ego's job is to tell us this! It continually says, "you're in dangerous territory, " whenever we veer off of our comfortable routine, our usual behavior patterns, or our unspoken agreements with others of how we should be and act. The ego's job is to keep us "safe" -- ie, what the ego views as safe, which is not the whole picture. The ego is always trying to "hold it together," because it's driving force is to feel in control, no matter what the cost.

Your soul, on the other hand, knows your truth. It also knows that you are fully equipped to venture into any new territory your heart is calling you to experience. The soul knows that you are more than capable of attracting like-minded teachers, guides and community to usher you along in your path. The soul knows that you are supported by a greater intelligence or the creator of all life, or whatever you choose to call the magical essence of life that pulls us toward our destiny and lights us up with new ideas when we are open to expanding. The key is taking new ideas or changes one step at a time, checking in with your intuition and wise inner guidance as you go.

My guidance to you is to stay with what you know and feel is authentic and true for you. Check in with yourself through journaling or meditation when you have a decision to make. A great exercise I learned from my teacher, Sonia Choquette, and something  I often lead my clients through, is listing all of your fears, so you can dump them. With eyes closed, tuning in to your heart,  begin with the words, "I'm afraid of __________________." Fill in the blank repeatedly until you've said aloud every fear you're experiencing.  Then take a deep breath, let all of it go, and fill in the blank, "my spirit says ___________________." This will open you to your deeper truth.
